Day 19. Van Horn to Marfa

What a day.  A 72 mile ride with a 50 mile incline with head winds and the infamous Texas chip seal roads.  But we made it.

Along the way we saw a Border Patrol with backpack headed on foot into the desert.   No telling what he knew before he headed out that way and just where in the desert he was headed.

Then a road runner ran across the road in front of us.  They're too fast to grab a camera to take a picture. It was really cool to watch him run.

We stopped at the Prada store to check on the shoes and purses.  It's an art building that was created by the Art Society in Marfa.  But it's so strange as it is sitting on the side of the road with nothing else in view.  I walked to the fence in back and there are hundreds of locks hanging in the back.  It's all about love and locking in their love.  Never heard of it but they were saying that they do that in to fences in SF, Pittsburg and other cities.

Then we stopped at the Valentine Library where the seniors - all ten of them - were selling burritos and sodas as part of their fundraising for their senior trip.  Great food and a lot of fun chatting with them.

Also last nite Bubba warned us about this deputy that gets over zealous, pulls cyclists over and really gives them a bad time.  Bubba has been to the Sheriffs office, talked to the judge, sent letters hoping they would stop this guy.  So today he first blew his siren as he passed.  Then he came back and stopped us.  But his boss must have talked to him as he was polite and asked us to please ride on the side of the road that he was concerned for our safety.  He said how rough the side of the road was and understood why we were riding but said if we didn't like the road we needed to find another road to ride.  All in all he was very pleasant.  We did ride closer to the middle because of the chip seal that was on the road where we were riding was the smoothest and we always moved over when a car was coming.
