Day 12 Tombstone to Douglas
I love climbing hills even though I'm slow but it is such a challenge and I feel so good about getting to the top without stopping. Today was one of hose challenging days. We climbed 5 hard miles up to the continental divide of 6030 elevation. Only to ride down into Bisbee where we had lunch at the High Desert Cafe. I'm so used to California and their ways that when I want to pay for my lunch they just ask me what did I have. I tell them and they tell me what I owe. That's what happens in these small towns. Anyone could dine and dash but I don't think they do. A different way of life. After lunch of a delicious quiche we checked out the Bisbee Bicycle Brothel. It's more of a bicycle museum than a bike shop.
Bisbee is an eclectic, cute, free-spirited, artsy kind of town (even to the sewer covers) and very touristy. Leaving Bisbee we passed the largest open pit copper mine which closed in 1985. It's was created bit by bit over a period of almost 60 years. I wish I could show you pics of it but it is too vast to get any feel for how large it is.
Then it was on to Douglas where we are staying. 25 more miles and we had a tailwind. Once again cruising along from 17-18 MPH. I'm impressed with myself.
We are staying at the Hotel Gadsden Hotel which is being restored back to its natural beauty. Eleanor Roosevelt and others have stayed here during Dinner was in their dining room. Breakfast will be there too.
