Day 37. Opelousas to St Francisville 68 Miles
So the start of our day seemed pretty simple. 68 miles and mostly flat. But 5 of us made a wrong turn and added 12 miles more to the total. We rode 80 miles instead. We did stop at a Dollar General called Coach and found we should have gone straight instead of turning at the one intersection. So not only did we have to turn around and go back but it was freezing out - no rain just very cold. We bought some gloves at the store which did help some. When we got into camp that nite we found more riders had been confused but they had upgraded Garmins that told them they were going the wrong way.
The most beautiful part of our ride was going through this very private road through the swamp area. There isn't a way to take a picture that would show you the beauty It. But just think of the movies with a swamp in it and you'll get the picture. Bubba guaranteed we would see an alligator on this road. We are so gullible that everyone was checking out the swamp and then we saw it: an inflatable alligator. He got the last laugh but we sure got a chuckle out of it.
By the time we to our first sag check in we were hungary and had the best biscuit I've tasted in a long time. Had it with bacon and egg. Tator Tots are a big item in Texas and Louisiana. A good alternative to french fries I guess because a lot of people order them. I don't think I even see them on Menus in California.
Rode through New Roads. A very upscale town. Lots of money in that with beautiful homes and acreage. And then later we crossed the Mississippi River with their new bridge. Reminded me of the Golden Gate Bridge and the new Bay Bridge. Only the cables were a golden yellow. Very striking.
Camping in a girls camp called Marydale for a rest day. We all need it after the last 2 brutal days of wind, rain, freezing cold. I admire us all that we rode the whole way.
Tomorrow we are off on a 83 mile ride I think. Not sure where as I don't look ahead.
