Day 49. Tallahassee to Live Oak 77 mile

We stayed all day on US 90E,   Quite a few hills but also rollers and our forever headwinds.  Our first stop was Tupelo Bakery in Montevilla.  Delicious.  I heard the scones were wonderful but I opted for quiche.  Absolutely the best I've ever had.   Then on to Greenville which was the home of Ray Charles.  There's a statue of him and of course we all had our picture taken with him.  It was a lovely park called names for him.

We crossed over the historic  Suwannee River.  That song Swanee River is actually the Suwannee River but too many consonants so they changed the song to Swanee River to make the song sound better.

After dinner Bubba had a special guest.  Mrs. Pritchard, 88 years old, who was a childhood friend of Ray Charles.  Quite a woman.  She had 5 children, dropped out of high school.   Went back and got her GED, then a BS degree and then her Masters.  It took her 3.5 hours to travel one way to Tallahassee during the week to get her degrees.  She taught school for 35 years.  Back in the day for a black woman it was very hard but she persevered.   She became the mayor of Greenville.   Her kids are successful also.  She talked about Ray and how they all played together.  He taught her cards and pulled pranks on her.  She said they never  thought of him as blind.  He was just one of the kids.  She said many things in the movie about him were not true.  Very interesting lady.  I would have loved to have sat down and talked to her one on one.
