Day 40. Franklinton to Poplarville 45 miles
45 miles - piece of cake right??!?!? Naught! We know by now that even though it's a short day - watch out there might be hills and bad roads. Fast traffic with fast cars, semis and logging trucks with no shoulders again for 23 miles. But the weather turned and it was a beautiful day for riding. There was a donut shop stop which seems to be the normal now. Love those glazed donuts. Something I never eat at home.
Bubba had spent an enormous amount of time looking for these off roads to keep us off the busy I10. Forever grateful to him as the countryside was beautiful. We stopped at this one place where there were some miniature horses in the field next to the road. They were a smaller version of a Shetland pony. We were taking pictures and talking to the horses. The owner came out of his home and went into the field with the horses and got them to come over to the fence so we could pet them. There was a very small horse who was only 2 1/2 weeks old. So very cute named Star. What a nice man to come out and share his horses with us. He has them just for pets.
We stopped on Main Street in Poplarville and went to Scooters (not Hooters) for lunch. Had a chicken salad PoBoy which was delicious and then we went to the drug store and had hot fudge sundaes. I will certainly have to change my eating habits when I get home.
When we got into camp we found out that Fred had found a stray little puppy. He ended up sticking him in his pack and riding with him for ten miles to a Vet. There was a collar on the dog with his name and phone # but no answer. The Vet called Fred a couple hours later and said they had gotten in touch with the family and they were on their way to get him. Fred is my hero!
Tonite was Nates birthday and Ann made him his favorite cake. Carrot cake... So good! Then Bubba handed him a card. As we went out to get our cake his wife Maggie came up and said what a sweet card. I just smiled as I had no idea what she meant. Then the card was later handed to us to read and it said To Nate. Happy Birthday. One hour foot massage from Ellen Diane and Gayle. We just laughter. It was pretty funny but I think Maggie at least took it seriously. Gapow did it. He's such a
funny guy.
Quite a few of the riders have come down with colds, etc. I know it's from the cold and freezing rain those 2 or 3 days. Some had had to go to urgent care. Also there's a stomach virus that was going around. Sure hope that has taken its course now. Enough for now!
