Day 42. Ocean Springs to Dauphin Island Alabama. 77 miles

Goodbye Mississippi and hello Alabama ....Sweet Home Alabama

Crossing into Alabama we took pictures of the Alabama state line where there are quite a few bullet holes in the welcome sign.  Not sure who did it or why but it can make for a good story.

Alabama is Forrest Gump shrimping territory and as a salute to him I had a shrimpPo'boy.
And everyone calls you honey or Mam here in the south.  Sure not used to hearing that coming from California.

It was a 77 mile challenge today because of no shoulders on most of our roads and of course we had our forever headwinds.   In 2011 when I did this ride I don't recall all the cold, the rain and the headwinds.  Must be climate change.

We were on beautiful country roads again with massive homes and an acre or so just for their front yard.  I will say both Mississippi and Alabama take great pride in their homes and surroundings.   On one of the backroads was a sign that read "If flooded, turn around don't drown". Never saw a sign like that before.

In camp there is a sign hanging on the fence that read "Do Not Tie or Hang Objects from Trees"

To get. To Dauphin Island we had to ride over the bridge which is long and has a 7% grade.  They said the headwind was 25 mph.  A couple of times it almost stopped me in my tracks while I was climbing.   Just like running into a wall.  I had to grip my handlebar to stay on the shoulder.  Going down wasn't much fun either as you had to pedal.   But we all made it.  Sue decided she wasn't going to ride the bridge and sat there for awhile.  A pickup truck with a couple of guys were there so she asked them if they were going across the bridge and if so, would they take her and her bike.  They said yes, moved their stuff in the back to make room for her bike and drove her across.  They wanted to take her all the way to the camp but she had them let her out sooner so she could wait for Ray and others to come across.  She's quite a character and an inspiration.

We're camping out tonite but they are moving us to a church tomorrow as a huge storm is coming through tomorrow night and Bubba wants to keep us safe and dry.  It's our day off so lots going on.  You won't hear from me tomorrow but will let you know about the storm on our next riding day.
